Western Downs Vineyards
In Queensland's Western Downs, the Maranoa region offers visitors a look at our pioneering past, wide open spaces and natural unspoilt landscapes.
Grape growing has long been practiced in the Maranoa. In 1862, Dr Ernest Seidel was the first to grow wine grapes at St. George. One year later in 1863, Samuel Bassett established vines at Bassetts, Roma.
The region has been the producer of premium quality fortified style wines such as liqueur muscat, port and sauterne style sweet dessert wines. Bassett's Romavilla Winery of Roma has proud history in the Queensland wine industry. In the 1880's this winery was winning gold medals at the London Wine Show for its ports. In recent years wineries have been established at Surat and St. George as winemakers identify wine styles that can be produced in their warmer climate.
The Carnarvon National Park can be accessed from Roma. Carnarvon Gorge is located 240km north.
A variety of accommodation is available in hotels and motels, caravan parks and host farms.
